The Influence of the Buyer

The interior design world was rocked earlier this year, at least if you are a fan of Mrs Hinch. The popular influencer revealed the interior of her new home and it’s a huge change from the one her fans know and love.

Interior trends can change overnight. In part due to the rise of celebrities on social media and their choice to share every aspect of their homes. So, what is the best way to keep your product line on trend, up to date, yet classic? A challenging balancing act for sure.

At Straits Home and Gift we; change our wholesale product lines twice a year, keep our trade pack sizes as low as possible, and offer a wide variety of products and design themes. Our aim is to allow our trade customers to keep their stores fresh and interesting. Whether that is online or on the high-street. We want to keep consumers returning to browse, buy, and recommend your businesses to their friends and family.

Things to consider when creating your buying strategy:

  1. Plan your buying by month/quarter. Many stores have key product ranges that sell week on week, but bringing in a completely new collection is a great way to excite customers. At Straits you can select products in advance, plan your deliveries, and aim to have a new eye-catching display to impress the consumer.
  2. Pick classic items for your target market. Bringing in something new doesn’t have to be bringing in something completely different. If your store is known for stocking fantastic candle holders, then expand on this theme. Choose a different style, make an impact with a different size, or expand the range with co-ordinating products.
  3. Find balance with what you love and what other people will love. One of the hardest parts of buying is expanding your horizons to consider what the consumer will be drawn to, even when it might be out of your comfort zone. If you love a product, you will be able to share that passion, which certainly is a great selling tool. However, just make sure you select pieces you love alongside those which may not be to your taste. After all, it might only take an influencer to change your mind!

The important thing to remember is that as a buyer, you are giving your customers an opportunity. An opportunity to bring something they love into their home. It’s a powerful role. Whether you have £4.6 million Instagram followers or a loyal base of customers in your own town, you are offering a very personal service. In many ways you are an influencer to your customers.
